Organisation

The Cooperative Storage Library Switzerland is the result of a collaborative project of the Central University Library Lucerne, the Central Library Zurich, the university libraries of Basel and Zurich and the Central Library of Solothurn. Management of the building and operations have been separated, with the building owned by the Speicherbibliothek AG public limited company and daily operations supervised by the Cooperative Storage Library Switzerland Association.

The building and its construction were financed by the Speicherbibliothek AG public limited company (plc); its shareholders are the libraries’ funding authorities (cantons, universities, foundations). The plc provided the approximately CHF 31 million necessary for construction and owns the plot and building. It was founded on 8 May 2014 and is headquartered in Büron. The CSLS itself has no employees. The plc’s shareholders are:

The Cooperative Storage Library Switzerland Association

The Cooperative Storage Library Switzerland Association ensures the CSLS’ operations and is the building’s long-term tenant. It was founded on 27 March 2014. The Association’s members comprise the participating libraries. All the CSLS’ costs must be covered by charging the participating institutions and customers for storage services and for all lending and scanning/copying services as well as for other library- or logistics-related services. The CSLS is a not-for-profit institution. The Association has 7 to 10 employees with full- or part-time contracts. They work in logistics, as librarians, as facility managers and in bookkeeping and administration and are supervised by a managing director.
